MUSIC to CREATE by | Jill Halliday
This is the time of year that many refer to as ‘the dead of Winter’. But nothing is dead. Only dormant. Resting. Readying to burst out and serve up Springtime with its resplendent beauty and perfectly timed break away from Winter!
The same goes for the artists of The Ten Collective. We’re not dead! We’re just tucked in our studios readying to burst out and serve up the Springtime 2025 Show and its perfectly timed break away from Winter.
These splendid winter months are when I move inside (with permission from the hibernating bears) and let the snow bury me so I can get busy. I work in the dark. That is when I move much of my art from mind to surface. Just me, the dark, and my art. Oh. And my dog.
Right. Just me, the dark, my art, and my dog. Oh. And my music.
Right. Just me, the dark, my art, my dog, and my music.
Music is an essential backdrop to my work routine. It has the very important job of filling in the blanks of space in the dark when I’m just sitting staring into the room not knowing what, or how, to draw or do or think or feel, other than fear, despair, and hunger. But that’s a different story.
Music is as much a part of my finished work as any other stage. I have considered including a list of a few of the tunes, which moved me through each work, on the back of the finished art….you know….;
So…..on the back of…..’Last Call’ I’d put;
Bill Evans. PEACE PIECE
….(hundreds of times on a loop…)….

Or…on the back of……’Party Animal’, I’d write;
Claire de Lune (Piano) | Debussy

……..on a loop….……
….But I won’t. It might taint the viewer. Plus, it’s private information.
My music taste is diverse, and personal.
And loud.

Aahhhhhh. Music to my ears.

And finally, Spring will come, and once again, we shall be standing in one of Almonte’s Historic Mills, surrounded by beautiful art and hundreds of Spring fevered happy to be here rain or shine art lovers from near and far!
One of my favourite aspects of this show is the noise. When I get a chance, I will pause just to listen. Just listen to the room that is buzzing with visitors, patrons, and friends, all of whom have come to the show with purpose and positivity. The room is loud! Loud with cheerful conversations, laughter, and sudden bursts of joyful delight reserved only when first laying eyes on the arrival of friends, and the greetings that follow. The room’s noise is forever busy with overlapping blah blahings that break into fits of laughter and settle into ongoing joyful meetings and talks of art, springtime, and everything in between.
And that is music to my ears. :)
