Working in Series and Personal Mythology | Maria Moldovan

When I first began my career, I was driven by the desire to create something entirely new with every piece. Each painting had to have a fresh idea, a new subject matter, and a unique composition. Repeating symbols or revisiting similar themes seemed almost like a betrayal of my own creativity, something I avoided at all costs.

But over time, I began to realize that repetition could actually be a powerful tool—not one that stifles creativity, but one that allows for exploration and deeper development. That was when I started working in series and also started using certain elements and symbols more often, repetitively.

Despite the comfort with working in series and with my own personal dictionary of symbols, I’ve never stopped craving new ideas. Experimenting with different compositions, new techniques, and visual languages continues to drive my process. This need for innovation keeps my work from becoming stagnant.

I am curious where this urge for the new and different will lead me in my new body of work dedicated for the 10Collective exhibition held in April at the Textile Museum in Almonte. Maria Moldovan
