Exploration of the Creative Process - JULIE MEHERTU - Part IV by Amelia Ah You
Julie Mehertu is an Ethiopian-American born artist. I was fortunate to have seen the collection of etchings as part the Migrations of Line at the AGO in December 2020. The Algorithms, Apparitions and Translations, 2013 I found especially powerful and richly connected with memories.
Her work is thoughtfully layered and her technique is complex as is her thought process. In an interview in 2021 for ArtNews, “For Mehretu, the studio is a place for “digesting” what is happening in the world … and … The images Mehretu gathers as source material for her paintings enter a vast archive—both physical and digital—that includes maps, architectural plans, clippings from newspapers and magazines, and much more. Whenever she is interested in creating a new painting around a specific topic or issue, she works with a research assistant to build an archive for it. Someday those archives, alongside Mehretu’s paintings, will serve as a testament to how one artist made sense of her times.”
