When the Painting Comes Behind the Curtains. ~. by Maria Moldovan

My very first experience selling paintings was spiced with some unexpected twist. Back in 2003 I was just freshly graduated from the University of Fine Arts and Design in Romania and I won a small grant to put a personal exhibition together. I was excited, full of ideas and creativity. It was the very first professional feedback from the society that my work is appreciated and what I do is valued. I was especially pleased about the fact that I have the chance to present my paintings properly. I took them to a small but recognized framing company and chose good quality frames for my big sized watercolor and mixed media paintings. The exhibition turned out great. I had ceramic sculptures in the space and paintings on the walls and there was a dialogue between the two dimensional and three dimensional works. Just few days before the end date of the exhibition I received the information that a couple is interested in buying two of my watercolors. Felt so good, exciting and also very new. We set up a meeting with the clients to do the exchange. They were picking up the artworks from my home based studio and as they were heading out the lady said to the gentlemen: “It will nicely fit to the colors of the new curtains”. I froze. I blocked. The world turned upside down very quickly and in two seconds I had one million thoughts, questions and debates in my head. I was shocked and didn't know what to do. Didn't know if I should do something at all. The paintings walked out of my life with the people who most probably just freshly renovated their home. The taste was definitely bitter sweet....

Luckily I didn't have the chance to experience similar situation in my career. People who are driven to my art find connection points to the meaning and symbolism of my works. Art shows like the 10Collective are great opportunities for me to have true and honest conversations with the people who see my work valuable and interesting.

Because paintings are not decorative art pieces. They point much further than superficial appearance. And it's a true gift to connect with people who see and think the same.
