Morning's Meander | Amelia Ah You

The long rays of early morning sun streak across the field. Beyond the trees the sky shifts its first lights from crimson to gold and pinks. We head into the woods, our footprints and pawprints follow on the frosty grass.

Today, we leave the familiar trails to follow the fresh scent of frozen pine needles and soft terrain of wet earth and moss on granite.

The light in the woods dims and brightens with the passing clouds. My dog Lollie walks ahead, occasionally pausing to sniff the frozen thin branch close to the ground, then taking a couple of deeper breaths as she raises her nose to the skies. She then turns to meet my gaze. We are safe to continue.

We cross the old logging road in a westerly direction. Crossing hills and valleys, a forest of mature pines and oaks, we climb over fallen trees and branches, the light is even with little contrast. The cold air is fresh and my breath feels free.

I see moss covered rocks. A comfortable feeling settles in me by the sight of vaguely familiar land form and shapes. We have been here before. The shattered rock mount is one of my cherished spots. Good memories of moments shared with a loved one here, enjoying a cup of hot tea in silence.

The moss and lichen are happy with the recent rain, all puffy and vibrant they line the top of the pink granite and hug the base of trees. I am in awe by their adaptability and resilience, their ability to survive draught, ice, snow and wind.
