The Unexpected Joy of Kid Doodles | Lily Swain

One of my favourite things in life is when I arrive at a meeting, open my notebook, and realize that every page has been drawn on or scribbled over by my kids. In that moment, as I scramble to find a fresh, clean page, I can’t help but laugh at the persistent chaos in my life. I imagine how hilariously unprofessional I must look to my colleagues. But rather than feeling embarrassed, I share the moment with them—and I watch as their faces light up with recognition. It’s a small, relatable human moment that we all can appreciate.

It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of work and forget what really matters. Between deadlines, meetings, and countless tasks, finding the elusive work-life balance can feel impossible. My days are often a blur of activity, with stress creeping in at every turn. But those little doodles—those tiny, colorful scribbles left by my kids—serve as a gentle reminder to stay playful, to find joy in the chaos, and to not take life so seriously.

Amid all the hustle, I’m reminded of the importance of maintaining perspective and embracing life’s messy, beautiful moments. Whether it’s a child’s drawing on a page, a spontaneous hug, or a moment of laughter, these small gifts can bring us back to what truly matters: connection, joy, and playfulness.

May you too find moments of joy in life’s little drawings left on the pages of your own book. Lily Swain
