What was first - the egg or the chicken? | Maria Moldovan
Ideas first or the simple act of painting?
I often get these questions from my viewers.: What is your inspiration? Where are your ideas coming from?
Some of my pieces truly have a clear starting point and planning, but so many art pieces I create are born from a more spontaneous process. Sometimes I do have an “egg”, an idea for a work but very often I start with the simple act of painting and my personal mythology will visit my canvas. This is why an “egg-less”, blank canvas can be frightening sometimes. If a certain idea, a concept is already born in my head that can lead and guide me, offer me a secure crutch to lean on. A more spontaneous approach leaves me in uncertainty, a little bit in a space covered with a dense fog. But oh how I love a foggy morning. A land covered with the white mist and merging into it can be so exciting. As I paint and explore the foggy space of an empty canvas, ideas will occur and things can take shape as all the elements of a landscape will clear out once the sun is strong enough to clear the fog.
