Working Intuitively. ~. by Lily Swain
My love for mixed-media art has blossomed over the years, there is so much freedom! I am able to incorporate all the elements of art I love into a single piece. I love drawing, painting, collage and photography. I can choose elements of each medium and combine them to create art that expresses my authentic self. This is such a satisfying way of working as an artist.
In my art practice a good portion of the work goes into planning. I spend a lot of time researching, sourcing materials, gathering paints, tools and other media. I lay everything out and organize my work space. I create a loose plan or intention of what I want to make. If I start to get lost or veer off course my plan works as a reference guide to keep me focused and moving forward.
Having my materials organized and easily accessible lets me focus on the process of creating without interruption. This allows me to work intuitively - my happy place where hours pass and feel like minutes. This is the “flow state” which people report feeling when they are deeply engaged and focused on something they love. It is real life magic and is when I feel most alive!
I always tell my students to allow themselves time to play and make mistakes, to focus on the process. These words often ring in my ear as I struggle to let go and loosen up. The perfectionist in me can be stiff and critical. This is an exercise in observing and letting go. A mindful art practice helps me to stay present, aware and grounded in my work. I strive to trust my process, experience and artistic intuition.
